Suspended timber floors and solid timber joists are a common feature in existing buildings. Defects and performance-related issues affecting these floors are commonly encountered. In this module you will develop an understanding of how these defects occur and how they influence floor performance.
In this module we explore the construction and structural principles of suspended timber floors together with the factors that influence their performance within existing buildings. A broad range of common defects are examined, including subfloor ventilation problems, timber deterioration, overloading, inappropriate notching and drilling, sound transmission issues, and defects associated with retrofit insulation works.
The module also considers the practical investigation of suspended timber floor defects and the importance of recognising how moisture, structural behaviour, material condition, and environmental influences interact within traditional floor constructions. Emphasis is placed on identifying defects accurately and understanding the mechanisms responsible for their development.
