Siphonage in drainage systems

Learn how pressure changes within drainage systems can cause siphonage, trap seal failure, and drainage odour problems.

ABOUT THIS MODULE

Siphonage in drainage systems occurs when pressure fluctuations within sanitary pipework remove water seals from traps, allowing foul air and odours to enter the building environment. Understanding how pressure behaves within drainage systems is essential when investigating drainage defects, recurring odour complaints, and ventilation-related failures.

This training module explores the principles of self-siphonage, induced siphonage, and pressure transients within above-ground drainage systems. The role of trap seals, stack ventilation, branch connections, and air movement within sanitary pipework is examined alongside common installation and design defects.

Practical diagnostic considerations are discussed throughout the module, including common symptoms of siphonage, inspection techniques, ventilation failures, and approaches used to identify pressure-related drainage defects in buildings.
