Moisture measurement

Learn how moisture is measured and how to interpret readings accurately during investigations.

ABOUT THIS MODULE

Accurate moisture measurement is fundamental to effective building diagnostics. Misinterpretation of moisture readings can result in incorrect diagnoses, unnecessary remedial work, and failure to identify the true causes of dampness and material deterioration.

In this module we explore the principles of moisture measurement within buildings, including the behaviour of moisture in building materials.

The module also considers the limitations of moisture measurement and potential error sources. Factors such as salts, conductive materials, surface contamination, material variability, and environmental conditions are discussed. There is also emphasis on why moisture readings should be interpreted carefully and always considered alongside wider building pathology observations.
