Heat loss is a fundamental aspect of building performance and has significant implications for energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and the risk of moisture-related defects. Understanding how and why heat escapes from buildings is essential when assessing both existing buildings and proposed improvements.
In this module we explore the principles of heat loss within buildings, including the different mechanisms of heat transfer and the factors that influence thermal performance. The session examines heat loss through the building fabric, the significance of U-values, thermal bridging, ventilation and air infiltration, and the influence of building form and geometry on overall heat loss.
The module also considers how heat loss is assessed in practice and the relationship between thermal performance, energy efficiency, and building pathology. Emphasis is placed on understanding the mechanisms responsible for heat loss and recognising how these influence the performance of buildings in service.
